The 8660 printer is more robust in design, has a longer rated print-head life, a cast metal frame for heavy-duty usage, and a longer print warranty. Other differences include:
- Faster throughput. The 8660 printer starts printing after receiving the first plane of data (the 8500 printer must receive the entire page). In addition, the 8660 printer has an expandable buffer which can receive the next page to be printed while the current page is still printing.
- A larger media capacity as a standard load. The 8660 printer holds twice the paper and three times the ribbon capacity as the 8500 printer.
- Multi-user capability. The 8660 printer has multiple active interfaces, an optional network interface, and it can be daisy-chained via SCSI interface. The 8500 is a personal printer.
- Can handle a broader selection of paper sizes, both smaller and larger.
